A wide variety of pavement sealants are on the market today, each with their own pro’s and cons. However of special interest in the industry today is the potential ban of Coal Tar based pavement sealers.
Recent US Geologic Watershed Research project has identified hazardous toxin PBT’s called PAH’s in watershed runoff by coal tar sealed pavements.
As a result the City of Austin Texas has banned the use of Coal Tar sealants within the City. Madison Wisconsin, Jacksonville Florida and other agencies are evaluating the dangers of Coal Tar based sealants. Both the Texas legislature and the US Congress has been briefed and are considering the long term effects to the public and potential ban of this substance.
